1070 "horses" under the hood / Laptops and PCs

In addition to the GE63VR 7RF Raider 4K, from compact models in Russian retail you can find MSI gaming notebooks like GS63VR 7RG Stealth Pro and GS43VR Phantom Pro . And MSI was one of the first to start selling thin laptops with graphics in the design Max-Q . All these devices meet one main requirement: with their size and weight, they are great for modern games – and the GE63VR 7RF Raider 4K model considered in this review is no exception. In front of you is a classic "spot", nevertheless equipped with a powerful CPU Core i7-7700HQ and graphics GeForce GTX 1070 8 GB. The device, in my opinion, perfectly suits the role of both a portable gaming station and a stationary home PC.

The most productive modification of the GE63VR 7RF Raider 4K got to my hands, because the test sample is equipped with 32 GB of DDR4-2400 RAM and a solid-state drive with 512 GB. In addition to SSD, the system has a terabyte hard disk form factor of 2.5 ". Such a configuration at the time of writing was worth an average of 150,000 rubles . However, the version of GE63VR 7RF-058RU Raider with Full HD-screen, 16 GB of RAM, 128 GB of SSD and 1 TB of HDD can be purchased for 115,000 rubles .

The wired network in the laptop is answered by the Killer E2500 gigabit controller, and for the wireless connection – Killer Wireless-AC 1435. The Wi-Fi module supports IEEE 802.11b / g / n / ac standards with a frequency of 2.4 and 5 GHz and a maximum bandwidth up to 867 Mbps and Bluetooth 4.1. A similar bunch of controllers, for example, is used in the model [MS-GT73VR 7RE Titan SLI] .

Included with the laptop is an external power supply unit with a power of 230 W and weight of about 750 g.

The MSI GE63VR 7RF Raider 4K is equipped with a home version of Windows 10 and a whole set of proprietary utilities, more about which you can read here .

# Appearance and input devices

Why do I think the MSI GE63VR 7RF Raider 4K is a compact model? For example, because the laptop weighs only 2.4 kg. In this case, as already mentioned, the model is equipped with top components. For comparison: riders "Rider" – laptops Alienware A15 R3 and Acer Predator G9 – weigh 3.4 and 3.7 kg respectively. The comparable weight of the model ASUS GL502VS (2.3 kg), well, there are laptops with graphics in the Max-Q design – they weigh an average of 2.2 kg with a cabinet thickness of 18-19 mm. So, in terms of mass MSI GE63VR 7RF Raider 4K is closer to the usual "spots", than to gaming ones, and it's quite easy to transport it in a backpack. To a man – so it is exact.

The thickness of the notebook is 27 mm, but since its body has a wedge shape, the device looks even thinner.

The laptop cover, as well as the area around the keyboard, is made of ground aluminum. It is impossible to recognize the MSI product in the device: the lid is decorated with decorative red stripes and a logo with a dragon. The remaining components of the body are made of durable matte plastic. Build quality is excellent, nothing rocks, does not creak and does not bend. The hinges of the laptop are very tight, so the top cover with the screen (by the way, m the maximum opening angle about 130 degrees) is clearly fixed in different positions and does not jar as during the game, and when typing. Nevertheless, you should always look after the MSI GE63VR 7RF Raider 4K, because dust and fingerprints are clearly visible on the metal surfaces of the notebook, which you would not be wrong to erase.

The bottom of the notebook is equipped with six grilles, through which air flows to the fans of the cooling system. Streams of already heated air leave the body through the ventilation holes located at the back and sides.

On the MSI table, the GE63VR 7RF Raider 4K stands firmly at the expense of four rubber feet.

No elements are provided behind the tested model. Status LEDs MSI GE63VR 7RF Raider 4K (battery level, activity of the drives and the wireless module) are carried out on the front panel of the case. Next to the power button there is another indicator. When the GeForce GTX 1070 is running, it glows white, and when the GPU is embedded in the processor, it is red.

All the interfaces of the "Ryder" are located on each side. On the left are Ethernet, HDMI, mini-DisplayPort, USB 3.0 A-type, USB 3.1 C-type and two 3.5-mm mini-jacks. Here is a loop for the Kensington lock. On the right side of the laptop there is a connector for connecting an external power supply, a pair of USB 3.0 A-type and a card reader. The location of the ports I consider to be successful, the number is also good. All A-type USB connectors are highlighted in red – it's much easier and more convenient to use a laptop in the dark.

The keyboard MSI GE63VR 7RF Raider 4K, of course, is also highlighted. There are three levels of brightness. The manufacturer claims that this is the world's first notebook with independent RGB-backlit keys – each key can glow with its own color, regardless of what color the neighboring ones have. Customize the keyboard, create additional keyboard shortcuts and adjust the backlighting in the SteelSeries Engine 3. I personally liked the option with a separate highlighting of the function buttons: press the Fn key and highlight those buttons, the Fn combination with which allows you to change something – the brightness , the volume of the sound, the state of the touchpad (on / off), and so on.

As for the keys themselves, the MSI GE63VR 7RF Raider 4K uses the exact same keyboard as in MSI GT73VR 7RE Titan SLI . A time-proven membrane-type mechanism is being developed, developed in conjunction with SteelSeries. The keys are large (15 × 15 mm) and comfortable, the distance between them is 3.5 mm. The Windows button is traditionally only one and is located on the right. However, for those who want to use a more familiar option, there is an appropriate setting in the BIOS. The keys Shift, Enter and left Ctrl are such as they should be in the game laptop: large and easily detectable to the touch. Pressing is felt quite clearly, backlash and false positives I did not reveal.

In general, the keyboard in the MSI GE63VR 7RF Raider 4K is very good. Playing for a laptop is convenient, writing this review on it too.

The size of the touchpad area of the touchpad is quite large – 110 × 62 mm, there is support for simultaneous multiple touches and gestures. The buttons are not as tight as those of the MSI GT73VR 7RE Titan SLI so many more users will like it.

Next to the power button there is a download button for the SteelSeries Engine 3 profiles and the activation key for the Cooler Boost function (when it is turned on, the cooling fans begin to rotate at maximum speed).

Finally, MSI GE63VR 7RF Raider 4K has a simple webcam – with a resolution of 720p and a frequency of 30 Hz. The image quality in the room with artificial light is frankly bad, so I would not use this camera for streaming.

# Internal arrangement and upgrade possibilities

As always, MSI gaming laptops are easy to disassemble. Consequently, they are easy to maintain and modernize. In order to get to the MSI GE63VR 7RF Raider 4K accessories, it is necessary to unscrew the 10 screws and carefully remove the plastic bottom.

The notebook is equipped with a separate cooling system with seven heat pipes and two fans. For removing heat from the mobile GeForce GTX 1070, there are four copper tubes, the largest of which simultaneously cools the CPU's power supplies. Two heat pipes are allocated for cooling the Core i7-7700HQ, and another heat pipe cools the power subsystem of the GPU.

The test sample has 32 GB of RAM in the form of two modules Kingston MSI24D4S7D8MB-16, which operate at an effective frequency of 2,400 MHz with delays of 17-17-17-39. The disk subsystem consists of a solid-state drive Samsung MZNLN512HMJP in volume of 512 Gbytes and a terabyte hard disk HGST HTS721010A9E630. As you can see, the tested laptop is capitally capitalized, so it's unlikely that a potential owner of such version of MSI GE63VR 7RF Raider 4K will soon change anything in the laptop. Nevertheless, the device allows you to install a second M.2-drive format 2280. Hard disk with time can also be changed to SSD with a SATA connector 6 Gb / s. The notebook supports the installation of 2.5-inch drives up to 9.5 mm thick.

I'll tell you about RAM. The MSI GE63VR 7RF Raider 4K has the maximum amount of DDR4 installed for this notebook. Practice shows that modern games have more than enough 16 GB of RAM, but there are already projects that of these 16 are ready to use 11-13 GB – that is, there is no special reserve. That's why the use of 24-32 GB of RAM in any gaming system in 2017 does not seem to be something redundant, especially if this system is bought not for one year.
