Over the years, the Assassin's Creed fans received new large-scale games of the series each year that carried them to a variety of cities and epochs. But over time the formula became boring, and the unsuccessful release of Assassin's Creed Unity influenced the audience's interest in the ensuing Syndicate . Therefore Ubisoft took a short break, giving the opportunity to the team that created Black Flag (which is among the most successful games of the series), to do something special. And Assassin's Creed Origins really turned out to be not only one of the best projects about assassins, but also one of the best action games in the open world.
Once in Siva and looking at the map of the world, you understand how big the game is, if not immense. Local Ancient Egypt is divided into dozens of zones, among which there are relatively large cities, and small settlements. It is a pity that the tourist regime, spared from missions and enemies, was delayed until next year – with it Origins will turn into the ideal guidebook to Ancient Egypt even for people far from games.
In Ghost Recon: Wildlands the map is also huge, but there the zones are too similar to each other. It came down to the fact that the architecture of buildings and their interiors turned out to be almost the same. From the environment of Origins impression is different – all locations are unique and full of all kinds of sights. And to explore the surrounding area is much more fascinating. It is interesting to consider the most beautiful statues, columns and paintings of those times. Origins is the prequel of the series, which should tell the Assassin's Creed fans about the birth of the Brotherhood of Assassins. But instead of a boring excursion into his story, writers start from afar and bring to the fore the defender of Egypt called Bayek. He is the last medzhayem of the old order – a kind of policeman of that era. But he was not able to save the most valuable man from death in his life – Bayek's son died at the hands of representatives of the Order of the Ancients. Guided by a sense of revenge, the hero goes hunting for scoundrels, meeting his wife on the way, getting acquainted with Cleopatra and other famous personalities and not stopping at anything.
If few people remember Arno and Jacob Frae, then Bajek Ubisoft clearly intends to make the new Ezio – the protagonist turned out to be very invoice. Although revenge for the murdered relative at first glance seems to be a tortured cliche, the character in itself is not a yelling Egyptian at all, ready to rush to people indiscriminately, and not a whiner. To emphasize the status of Bayek, the developers changed the structure of the narrative. Now it is impossible to gallop across the plot missions, ignoring all other entertainments in the open world. The fact is that each task makes demands on the level of the hero, and if it is insufficient, expect problems. Yes, from some point it seems a nonsense situation when the guards suddenly find themselves much stronger, and the deadly secretive blow inflicted on the captain is more like tickling. But in this way, Ubisoft wanted to give players the opportunity to get used to the role of mejaya and humanize it, turning it from a normal murder machine into a worthy citizen who honorably wears his title.
Therefore, when you hit a new storyline, you notice that the map is strewn with various side tasks, which will become the main source of experience and levels. These external assignments succeeded in glory – almost all of them are mini-stories, one way or another connected either with the widespread at that time occupations, or with some personal problems of the inhabitants. Often, we are pampered with multi-stage missions – for example, at first, an uncomplicated case of transporting wounded soldiers from one place to another turns almost into a family drama. In another episode, Bayek tries to find the cause of the terrible stench in one of the districts, and the denouement turns out to be quite unexpected.
Not all side quests turned out to be good and original, but frankly unsuccessful – just a few. So basically you do them not because you need it, but because of the ever-growing interest. There are almost no idiotic errands like collecting five flowers or banal killing crocodiles on the river bank. Almost always, these are interesting or even funny situations that make virtual Egypt a lively and "real" place. Particularly fascinating were moments with investigations when Bayek is in someone's house or at the scene of a crime and must study the subjects in order to arrive at a logical conclusion and solve the problem. In general, if the series of Assassin's Creed continues to move in this direction, hardly anyone will protest.
Experience is not the only reward for completing quests. In some cases, the characters can express gratitude by giving the hero the legendary equipment. Yes, in Origins the outfit system includes several degrees of rarity and offers extensive customization capabilities. Among the melee weapons are swords, spears, hops, axes and much more – the player is already to decide whether he prefers to deal slow but powerful blows or take care of the opponent with quick attacks. Bows also come across different: from the most ordinary to producing several arrows at once. The same with shields – some better protect against long-range attacks, and some will save from fire.
Together with the equipment, the combat system has also changed – now the battle with a horde of guards is unlikely to end with their death. Bayek can make light and heavy blows, put the block and jump aside. As such, there is no counterattack (although from the habit of often want to press the "triangle" on the gamepad), but over time the character learns to react to attacks of opponents and push them away with a shield. To put the block during fights with ordinary enemies it is not necessary – they do not deliver special problems. But if there are captains or guards with huge shields next to each other, the situation becomes a little more complicated. It is necessary to react in time to the intensified attacks, to try to bypass opponents from the back, to break through the defense and not to forget about incendiary bombs and jars with combustible oil. For greater entertainment.
So in Origins have changed enough elements of the familiar formula, so that even tired of Assassin's Creed players could get pleasure from passing. There are not even tens and hundreds of collectibles like senseless feathers, pages and caskets. And unloved by many towers are unlocked in each new region automatically, although you can climb to tall statues and buildings to enjoy the scenery, synchronize and improve the perception of the Seine – the hand eagle Bayek. The hero is now unable to see through the walls of all opponents through the walls – he, like in Wildlands, needs to launch a "live drones" and manually mark all opponents. This complicates the task, as some guards go unnoticed, but at the same time stealth becomes more interesting. And nothing prevents to make a sortie at night, when half of people go to sleep.
Another advantage of the game is attention to detail, noticeable literally at every step. It's worth getting off the horse and going hunting for livestock, as crocodiles will start chasing a poor animal. Crossing a small river or lake, you often observe how a whole flock of frightened birds beautifully takes off over the water. If you go through the wheat field, Bayek, as the hero of Russell Crowe from the Gladiator, holds his palm over the ears. When you are standing still in one place, an eagle sits on your hand, which you can feed, and when you leave the water, the hero shakes his hands. Another funny feature is the muffled voice of the character, if he puts on a suit with a head covering covering his face. What to say about architecture – it does not cease to delight even after tens of hours.
With the Origins release, those who missed Assassin's Creed received a real gift – a large-scale and sometimes insanely beautiful game, which is rumored to be the beginning of a new trilogy. For beginners, this is an ideal opportunity to get acquainted with the series, and tired of "these endless assassins" can throw down doubts and spend dozens of hours in a worked-out to the smallest open world. Entertainment here is literally at every turn, from excellent plot and side tasks to exploring the pyramids, full of secrets, and solving puzzles. You do not want to leave Ancient Egypt, until everything is thoroughly studied, – perhaps, this is the best compliment of Assassin's Creed Origins.
