No – say goodbye to your little soul. Oh, oh, how did it happen? Okay, do not cry, baby, here's a list of debtors – bring their souls in return for their own. Otherwise, you yourself feel better for a couple of tens of grams.
Simple cupdown Cuphead is coping with the explanation of why an amusing little man with a cup head (and his brother, if you pass in a cooperative) needed to destroy all the animals in the district. Anthropomorphic inhabitants of the islet are nice only externally, but in fact – those still lovers take risks at the table. And just try to hint about the return of the debt – they will immediately try to kill.
Graphics, created by hand and inspired by cartoons of the 30s of the last century, works perfectly for the atmosphere and plunges into the "cozy" world, where ordinary people can turn into surreal monsters in the blink of an eye. Because of this, the creation of the brothers Mouldenhauer is not so much a game as you enjoy an animated full-length movie, where for some reason it is allowed to control the hero. Sometimes what happens on the screen can not be distinguished from real animated pictures, especially when using a black and white filter.
Fortunately, Cuphead did not become one of the projects that differ chic graphics and empty gameplay. On the contrary, the style fits well with the gameplay, but, alas, it is not always convenient for him. Due to the large number of animated objects in the frame, it is sometimes difficult to "read" the attack area and you can simply not notice the boundaries of the danger zone. At some levels, there are places where a hero completely closes a column – try to dodge the approaching threat, especially when there is not enough health. To the notorious hardcore such moments have nothing to do and more resemble a banal scam. Well at least, they are rare.
For those who did not follow closely the development of indie long-term construction, it may be a surprise that the project is actually about battles with a huge number of bosses, rather than the usual platformer, which Cuphead seems to be on separate rollers. A couple of standard races from left to right are still there, but they are lost against the background of remarkable confrontations with various opponents and serve only to earn currency for the purchase of new weapons and improvements.
But how the hell are the battles stuck! The game offers almost two dozen (or three, if you count each adversary at one of the final stages) as different as possible from each other fights. And each of the opponents has several forms, sometimes causing a serious change in tactics. Battles require not only a thoughtful approach, but also a good knowledge of the boss's behavior pattern in each phase. If you try to defeat a cavalry assault, you will die, die, die – Cuphead is merciless towards the inattentive.
The very process of parsing rivals for cartoon spare parts delivers an indescribable pleasure. At first you do not understand what to do at all, a little later you get to go through the first stage, then you fly by the machine, but the second and third. The third, an infection, how could you … oh, it turned out, cheers! And it's funny when the most annoying enemy, who had to kill most of the time, after the passage becomes a favorite rival in the game – you learn his habits by heart and put him on the shoulder blades without getting damage.
Someone will think this is too much, but in fact, Cuphead is not incredibly complex. Especially for people who are familiar with platformers of 8- and 16-bit epochs. The game uses the same principles, and the only real inconvenience these days is the need to pass the level from the very beginning due to an absurd mistake in the final, but it's also a tribute to the traditions. The rest is worth once to understand how to act in this or that situation, and the bosses will not pose a serious threat. Unless at the expert level, the difficulty will be a little sweaty, since the bouts there go longer.
By the way, battles can develop in different scenarios. The developers used a good technique – the bosses have several types of attacks, which alternate in a random order. Variety, of course, is our everything, but sometimes the system works strange. In one attempt, the dragon fires at you from all the guns and does not give room for maneuver, and in the next reluctantly spits fire and does not pay attention to the boy who floundered under his feet. On a system with a dynamic change in complexity is not like – the aggressiveness of the enemy does not depend on the number of approaches and is chosen, this feeling at random. But even under the most unfavorable conditions, the game allows you to win, you just need to press the keys a little faster.
Perfectionists will be even more fun – as a result of the level, a rating is determined, which is formed from the time of passage, the damage received and a couple of other parameters. For the first time Cuphead you can run hours for 5-8 depending on your skills, but it's impossible to stop at this. There is a new level of complexity – how not to try it? – and then completely catch yourself thinking that you run the game time after time to reach the maximum score in each battle.
