Participation in the Google I / O conference – the pleasure is not cheap. Only entrance tickets this year sold for $ 900, and in fact it is still necessary to calculate the cost of flight and accommodation in a very expensive city of San Francisco. To slightly sweeten the pill to programmers (and their employers), Google each year generously gives participants a fresh Nexus-iron, which for a while is guaranteed timely updates and freedom from designer attempts by OEMs.
This year the bag of Santa Claus turned out to be especially tight – in addition to the already known Galaxy Nexus with an upgrade to Android 4.1 Jelly Bean and a couple of gizmos, there also lay the Nexus 7 tablet with the corresponding screen diagonal and the Nexus Q set-top box. our market is much more interesting, the first material we gave it to him.
At once we will make a reservation, that the given text does not apply for a rank of the high-grade review at least for two reasons. Firstly, the author enjoyed the Nexus 7 only a couple of days (although not particularly releasing it from his hands), and secondly, the author did not think to take with him on the trip one of the irreplaceable editorial calibrators Spyder4Elite therefore very impressive for such a low price, the screen remained unmeasured.
Nothing new under the moon, here and on the back cover of Google Nexus 7 we will find a large inscription ASUS and a small sticker with the model number – ME370T. This is the heir of the 7-inch "tablet" EeePad MeMO, a couple of generations of which ASUS dragged through various exhibitions for a year and a half, but did not start the series. The latest demo samples sported a 5-megapixel rear camera, microSD and microHDMI, a capacitive stylus in a special groove, and a dazzling price tag in 500 evergreens.
Google got rid of all of the above, at the same time relieved and ennobled the appearance of the tablet. Mathias Duarte on I / O was especially arrogant about the back cover of the Nexus 7 – they say, tried to bring tactile sensations closer to what you are experiencing when putting on classic racing gloves. In the opinion of the author of this note, in connection with the use of not the most expensive plastic ("project badging", tudyat it into a swing!), It turned out much more like the upholstery of the ceilings of the classic models of the Zhiguli, late 1980s. Sorry, Matthias.
But if you digress from the tactile pleasures and just appreciate the mass and ease of gripping, then in the hands of the Google tablet is almost as good as the once lying HTC Flyer. I think the designers at Nexus 7 would be happy to experiment with the curvature of the frontal surface, but the accursed production budget straightened all the lines back – the curved glass of Gorilla Glass is not cheap. Maybe it's for the best – Flyer and beckoned to turn itself into a horizontal position, and Nexus 7 is more pleasant to hold vertically – in fact, the interface of the OS while imprisoned under this scenario (see below). Vertical grip is facilitated by a small mass, which makes it comfortable to hold the tablet with one hand.
For 7-inch tablets now has a resolution of 1024×600, and ASUS and Google decided not to save and pleased us with a very good IPS matrix from the Koreans Hydis with a resolution of 1280×800, as in Galaxy Note. This gives us a density of 216 dots per inch – not a leader figure, but given the price of the Nexus 7 it's very good.
As we said above, we still have our own measurements with a colorimeter, and according to Western testers, the display gives out just over 300 nits of brightness with a contrast ratio of more than 850: 1. This is not bad, but rather fuzzy against the background of "projectors" Super IPS + in a number of other tablets produced by ASUS. It can not be said that the tablet completely folds in bright sunlight, but the traditional ability of Corning's glass to collect fingerprints further worsens the situation.
As for the color gamut of the display, it is surprisingly quiet for the Korean origin of the matrix. Compared to some other matrices, the main damage occurred in green, as can be seen from the schedule of the color coverage (according to sRGB), conducted by Brian Klan from Anandtech, – we have about 80% coverage, which can be considered a very worthy result.
NVIDIA included Google Nexus 7 in the so-called Kai program, designed, according to the company's official representatives, to "provide the market affordable for $ 199 tablets with powerful 4 (+1!) – Tegra 3 nuclear processors." Lovers of beautiful specifications can start jumping to the ceiling, and the rest of the author would like to remind "people's wisdom" that if the Pentium does not work out of the crystal, then you can try to sort out the grades, Khm, silicon and make at least Celeron.
In other words, if something is unstable, you can play with the frequencies of this and the cache memory volumes and, finding a working combination, pompously launch a new marketing initiative "affordable power in every house." Since 40-nanometer NVIDIA chips are manufactured in TSMC factories (and these are still pussies), there are reasons to "play" – by train and a small cart each day. Actually, NVIDIA is just one of the funny people here – it's enough to remember the existence of a three-core CPU of one company and malicious comments on this topic from another.

By Nexus 7, the above described scheme has the most direct relationship – the box proudly adorns the inscription Tegra 3, but in fact the consumer gets the weakest model of the family – T30L. The difference between the models is clearly visible from the table, especially the memory bus, which has been crooked up to 667 MHz, looks like a memory bus – all the same one-channel as the rest of the family members.
But the processor is nothing, the real problem with the Nexus 7 is a small amount of permanent memory. Of the 8 GB of testbed after installing a small number of programs, we were available about 5 and a half. This, as well as the lack of mass storage mode and SD card slot, is understandable given the orientation to developed markets and browsing [легального] video from the Internet – well, programmers without SD and UMS are living easier. In general, the tablet can be connected via MTP, which is supported by MS Windows without additional manipulation with the software.
Google refused to dance with wolves from Verizon, AT & T and the like and release a version with the support of cellular networks did not. Instead, the connection provides a very interesting, colorful set of components. For Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, the production module of AzureWave, a Taiwanese company, whose products are rarely seen in the top mobile equipment, answers. Nevertheless, during testing we had no problems with receiving the signal around the entire perimeter of a rather large house.
Support for a very important NFC standard for Google is provided by the NXP chip (which is practically a monopoly in this matter). But with the navigation came a small slip – here it is represented not very young already by the chip Broadcom BCM4751, which, unlike its more recent version 47511, supports only GPS. This, however, does not prevent him from finding briskly with a dozen satellites in less than a minute and quickly navigating through them – in two-story America it's not so difficult at all.
Some piquant details pertain to the connection of peripherals to USB. Purely hardware USB host mode is supported, and much works without fuss with the drivers – the keyboard, mouse and even the microUSB → Ethernet adapter. The only thing that does not work is the connection of external drives. The problem, like many others, is solved by rutting the device and using additional software.
There is also an alternative way – support for Nexus 7 will be included in the open sources of Android (AOSP), which means that the craftsmen can simply turn on the support of external drives back in one of the self-made firmware.
Some of us have very conflicting feelings for Tegra, but in reality if we estimate the good old American bang for the buck, then for $ 199 we get enough performance – take a look at the tests. The tablet in the Basemark 2.0 Taiji test was weak, there was a noticeable twitching of the image. According to the results of the GL Benchmark 2.1 Egypt test (rendering at 720p without display, regardless of the screen resolution of the device), the Nexus 7 predictably lagged behind Tegra 3 T33 (but not much) and very much, 1.5-2 times, from tablets with 2- or 4-nuclear graphics PowerVR SGX543.

However, we should always keep in mind that in real life igrodely still rely on fairly simple tablets and smartphones to cover the maximum number of players.
The back cover of the Nexus 7 is not removed, and therefore there is no access to the battery. There's nothing wrong with this either, because the battery life of 16W * h (3.7V / 4325mAh) is reminiscent of the iPad of the first generation. If you do not drive very hard Nexus 7, then counting on a whole day of periodic, prolonged interaction with the tablet is quite real.
In the test AnTuTu battery benchmark tablet confidently scored not a record, but a decent 447 points. That is, first he flatly refused to dial them, because AnTuTu is still not supposed to be communicating with Android 4.1, but a laptop with Linux and USB-cord helped to whip a stubborn.
By the way, about compatibility – the absolute minority of programs does not work in Jelly Bean. Of the three dozen required applications, only three of them refused to load because of incompatibility, two of them, by some coincidence, refer to simple travel planners.
Some innovations of JB can not be adequately assessed without comparing it with ICS on the same device – you can easily feel the huge amount of work done to improve the smoothness of the interface (the so-called Project Butter) with the help of Galaxy Nexus. Our patient, Nexus 7, originally runs Android 4.1, so there's nothing to compare – everything is smooth. It remains only to comment on the innovations in the interface, and there are not so few of them.
For example, while other OSes pull up to the Android level in terms of widgets and especially notifications, Google engineers are trying to increase the gap. Examples can be seen in widgets that are automatically rebuilt when a large new widget is added to the screen. As for Google+ notifications, here is a good example – the post displayed in the notification panel can be right there and "approve" (from Google, recall, it's called +1) or to copy to your feed. Other applications also allow some level of interaction with notifications, for example a shot screenshot can be immediately sent to Picasa or any social network.
Testing innovations JB deserves a separate article, especially regarding the Google Now time management functions – for the system to "digest" the approximate daily routine of a person, take several days of observation, and use the system better from a smartphone. In the meantime, we note an interesting feature: in Jelly Bean, the Google Now control panel is called up by a long press on the virtual Home button or from the unlock screen. In the process of pressing around the place of touch, there appears a peculiar "pimply" halo that looks similar to the texture of the back cover of the tablet. We will consider this as a small greeting from the Duarte team, which hints at us that Google is able to bind software and hardware into a single whole.
But this section remains almost empty, either for reasons of economy, or just out of common sense, but Google removed the original camera from the original ASUS ME370T. There is a road to it – the author can not remember a single group of people who regularly take photos with camera plates, except perhaps members of the party "United Russia", with which, as it were, everything has long been understood.
As for the front camera, the quality of its work in Skype can be estimated as average – in a darkened room the frame necessarily overgrows with noise. Well, who, in general, prevents the inclusion of light during a conversation?
Review Google Nexus 7 was not very emotional, then why such an aggressive headline? To the fact that it reflects the realities of two markets at once. On the native American market for Google, Nexus 7 was sent to remove the scalp from the parasite on Google's and Oracle editorial troll ) tablet Amazon Kindle Fire, sold at a fair price. For this Nexus 7 armed with the maximally expanded version of the store Google Play, with movies, television series, music and even periodicals. Google goes on the offensive in the battle of ecosystems for users' wallets.
I know it's clear that this battle has nothing to do with the Russian market, because there's nothing to beat especially: users keep their wallets on the lock, constantly emphasizing as the main advantages of Android the absolute dominance of freeware on Google Play, in especially difficult cases, the ability to easily find apk-files with paid programs. Imagine that money will be paid for the content, it's very difficult – Russian users will be attracted by systems like ivi.ru, which offer clients for the Android platform and free viewing with ad units.
Therefore, Google will not bring a tablet here, the production of which costs more than 180 dollars and sell it here for 200, hoping to make money on Play. Instead, ASUS can bring it here, but with the goal of extracting profits from the hardware, as soon as our users are willing to pay only for this. As a result, the PCT sticker will cost dad Dorset dollars a hundred times over the American price.
