This 13-inch notebook belongs to the third generation MacBook Pro with the Retina screen. The first was built on the Intel Ivy Bridge platform and was equipped with drives with a SATA bus. The second generation switched to Haswell processors and brought support for the PCIe interface for solid-state drives. In this case, models of the middle of 2014 on Haswell differ from their predecessors only by increased CPU frequencies within the same 28 W thermal package. Processors with the Broadwell microarchitecture in the Broadwell-U version began their commercial life only in February of this year, so we really see the new MacBook Pro just now. By the way, his brother with a 15-inch screen will appear even later, following quad-core Broadwell versions, and maybe even not Broadwell, and Skylake-Intel has not yet disclosed its plans in this direction.
Another significant innovation was timed to the next upgrade of the processor platform: new SSDs with PCIe x4 interface appeared in the new MacBooks. Finally, there was a slight change in the ergonomics of the MacBook Pro, related to the intriguing Force Touch technology, which debuted in the 12-inch ultraportable MacBook. But we start, as expected, with hardware specifications.
In general, Broadwell architecture represents the development of the architecture of Haswell, but on the process technology of 14 nm and with minimal changes in the core of x86. In the terminology, Intel Haswell refers to the "so" phase corresponding to the emergence of a new architecture, and Broadwell is a "tick" associated with mastering a new technological process.
Accordingly, there is no significant growth in performance per clock from Broadwell, although Intel says it is increasing the IPC (Istructions per Cycle) by 5% compared to Haswell's. The main advantages stem from the change in the process technology and the concomitant reduction in operating stresses. MacBook Pro, due to the platform change from Haswell to Broadwell, has acquired a line of three CPUs – Core i5-5257U, Core i5-5287U and Core i7-5557U, whose base frequency is 100 MHz higher than that of similar positions in the MacBook Pro 2014. The heat package is still the same – 28 W.
The processors have an integrated eight-generation Intel GPU in the maximum configuration for today – the Iris 6100, which includes 48 executive units (EU). For comparison: the graphics core Iris 5100 in the MacBook on Haswell contains 40 EU. In addition, the Broadwell GPU architecture has been optimized. According to Intel, graphics performance in Broadwell-U has grown by 22% compared to the same indicator of Haswell-U.
In addition to fully hardware decoding of H.264 video, there is some software decoding of H.265 (HEVC): some of the operations are performed on shader ALUs. However, the latter function is hardly available in OS X.
GPU frequencies used in the MacBook Pro are almost the same (1.05-1.1 GHz). And by the way, welcome the long-awaited support for the resolution of 3840×2160 with a frequency of 60 Hz via DisplayPort.

The most noticeable advantages of Broadwell are to be expected in the field of power consumption. The CPU chip itself consumes energy more efficiently within its TDP. In addition, part of the optimizations fell on the built-in south bridge. Processors Broadwell-U, relatively speaking, are systems on the chip, since the south bridge PCH-LP is decoupled on one substrate with the CPU. PCH is still produced on a 32 nm process technology (a small contribution to the combined capacity of SoC allows us not to pursue a more progressive standard), but has undergone changes that reduced the chip's power consumption in idle and under load by 25% and 20% respectively. Due to the updated sound DSP, power reduction is achieved when playing music and movies.
It's not for nothing that Apple indicates 10 hours of battery life for web surfing (an hour more than last generation) and 12 hours for watching videos in iTunes. However, a slightly enlarged battery contributed to this parameter (74.9 vs. 71.8 Wh / h).
The second, if not the first significant innovation in the new MacBook Pro is the SSD with PCIe x4 interface.
