On the verge of a Reasonable: ASUS ROG GX700 / Laptops and PCs

In recent years, mobile gaming solutions are becoming more powerful. Despite the noticeably higher cost with performance similar to fixed PCs, their sales are growing, and the manufacturers have seriously taken up this segment of the market. The main players and remain three companies: ASUS, Dell (with a series of Alienware) and MSI. While the last two were engaged in easy “facelifting” of their models and updated the filling after the release of new platforms from Intel, ASUS decided to demonstrate all their engineering achievements and show “who rules the ball” in fact.

This is how the first laptop with a water cooling system was built (it is made in a separate case), which is equipped with a full-fledged NVIDIA GTX 980 graphics card – as in a desktop PC. A system that quickly turns into a portable PC without a huge loss in performance, packed with the most modern interfaces, with an insanely fast and massive disk subsystem, top components and a quality screen: all this – ASUS ROG GX700, a laptop on the verge of reasonable and only for the elite.

The model belongs to a series of gaming devices ROG, which is currently singled out by the manufacturer as an independent brand. It’s worth mentioning separately that this laptop goes into the year of the 10th anniversary of the ROG – it was in 2006 that the first devices with this logo were released. Thus, the release of the GX700 is not just a demonstration of technological capabilities, but also a confirmation that gaming is becoming increasingly important for ASUS.

⇡ # Packaging and delivery set

A laptop with an external water cooling system unit (SVO) comes in a huge plastic case. Since our specimen was an engineering sample, there were no identification marks on it. It is easy to confuse with the suitcase of the traveler, especially considering the weight – about 25 kg. The packaging of retail copies will be much more colorful, but it will still be a suitcase that protects the ROG GX700 and the SVO unit from all adversities.

All elements are fixed in the nests in tight foam and fixed with the help of special belts. This “packaging” is not thrown out two weeks after the purchase, as it often happens with simple laptops. And without such a suitcase to transport the ROG GX700 in full ammunition – not the best idea.

A wired mouse and two power supplies of different power are supplied with the laptop and external cooling unit. The first one, at 330 W, is designed to work with the ROG GX700 paired with SVO at the maximum possible CPU and GPU frequencies. And with the help of a smaller 180-Watt PSU, the manufacturer proposes to recharge the notebook when operating without an external cooling station.

⇡ # External appearance

Despite the exclusivity of the model, the design of the ROG GX700 is not unique – it looks very similar to the ASUS ROG G752, which, in turn, is an improved version of the popular earlier G751. The ROG GX700 uses slightly different materials, smoothed shapes, reduced thickness and weight, changed the color of the case, added decorative elements / inserts. The model looks modern, stylish, expensive. And this, in our experience, happens with gaming laptops not always.

The upper part and decorative covers are made of ground aluminum. Several plastic inserts with a red-orange backlight are used. The ROG logo located in the center of the case is also highlighted.

In addition to the logo on the ROG GX700, there is also a decoding of the abbreviation ROG, located on the plastic overlay, in the area of the insert “for gold,” an element that should immediately attract attention.

Despite the use of almost the most powerful components on the market, the notebook’s thickness was kept in the range of 33-35 mm – an excellent result for a model with such characteristics.

Another logo of the game series is located next to the numeric keypad. The plastic element is “painted” with a familiar pattern that can be seen at the bottom of the laptop.

On the left side there are two USB 3.0 connectors, a 3.5 mm audio output (with S / PDIF) and an audio input, a SD / SDHC / SDXC memory card reader. On the opposite side there was a place for another USB 3.0 port, network RJ-45, the newest USB 3.1 Type-C and its version with Thunderbolt 3 and video interfaces mini DisplayPort 1.3 and HDMI 2.0. The last three are used explicitly for growth – they have the possibility to transmit 4K- (with output to several screens) and 8K-content with the usual 60Hz frequency of scanning, as well as high-quality sound.

The hinges of the ASUS ROG GX700 are metal, rigid and well-holding the screen position.

The maximum opening angle is small, about 125-130 degrees, – it is quite natural phenomenon taking into account the design features.

Four rubber feet are used to engage the work surface. For their task, they cope well, but because of insufficient height, the bottom of the notebook scares pretty quickly.

Five blue LED indicators are located on the front edge of the case. Thanks to the double indication (duplicating LED indicators), two of them are clearly visible from almost any angle.

The quality of the materials used in the notebook is very high, but the processing of the elements and the assembly cause some criticism. But, most likely, the visible gaps between some details, as well as the deflection of the inner plastic overlay, are explained by the fact that our ROG GX700 is a pre-production model.

In the dark, red illumination looks particularly interesting – during the operation of the ROG GX700, the room lights up with spectacular flashes.

⇡ # The Block of the Air Defense System

Separately we will consider the external block with the built in system of water cooling. It’s worth to pay tribute to ASUS – it’s the only company in the world that has guessed to offer users such a transformer, one of the main elements of which allows to significantly increase the performance of the system as a whole.

It takes just a few seconds to connect the cooling system. It is enough to put the ROG GX700 on a stand, hitting metal clips in the holes in the lower part of the case, and lower the special handle, ensuring a tight connection of the fittings of the SVO and the power connectors. The resulting design is clearly designed for a large desktop. And for detaching the SVO, it is enough to press one button.

It is important that all this can be done both when the power is turned on and off. The transfer of the cooling system from air to liquid type occurs without interruption of operation. By the way, the fans in the ROG GX700 continue to rotate even when the SVO unit is connected.

The only limitation of using a laptop with the docking station is the prohibition on changing the position of the entire structure without disconnecting. In other words – if you wanted to change the dislocation, then for the beginning it is necessary to separate the elements and move them separately. In the rest everything turned out to be very easy and simple. We did not find any leaks during the testing. The cooling liquid does not pour out even if the connection / disconnection is repeated. The manufacturer declares the possibility of refueling, but exclusively in the conditions of the service center. The declared period of use of liquid filled at the factory is about 3 years. The actual deadline, in our opinion, depends heavily on the frequency and time of operation of the device, the magnitude of the load on it and the operating temperature of the components, and SVO in particular.

⇡ # Input devices

The ASUS ROG GX700 is equipped with a full-sized keyboard with a digital unit. The island type keys use standard membranes. The aluminum cover from the usual versions of the ROG GX700 GE72 was replaced by a similar plastic and covered with a colorful “cloth.”

The color of the buttons is black, the surface of the keys is matte, all letters and symbols are red. The backlight is one-color, also red, provides three levels of brightness and the ability to turn it off altogether. Through special software, you can activate the backlighting exclusively for certain (already selected for you by the manufacturer) keyboard shortcuts.

The size of the main keys is 15 × 15 mm. The buttons of the upper control unit are somewhat smaller in height, which is the norm for most notebooks. All control keys work by default when the Fn button is pressed. In the upper left corner there are six additional customizable keys.

The distance between the keys is 3 mm, the stroke is 2.5 mm. Pressures are soft, clear, with a moderate force returning force. The sound is not loud. The plastic lining around with a rubberized coating is quite stiff on the entire surface, but the keyboard in some parts noticeably flexes. In general, it is quite a typical keyboard for a gaming laptop.

The working area is noticeably offset to the left of the touch panel, the average size is 120 × 65 mm. As a surface – semi-plastic. It uses two physical keys with a medium stroke, a muffled but audible click sound. The touchpad is very sensitive and recognizes gestures well. There were no complaints here.

The ASUS ROG GX700 has a 1.3 megapixel camera, next to which are two microphones for better sound transmission and noise reduction, and an ambient light sensor. The quality of the picture does not stand out particularly against the background of other laptops, the maximum resolution is 720p.

⇡ # The internal structure of the

Despite the complexity of the design, the ROG GX700 is quite easy to disassemble. To do this, unscrew the 12 screws (part of which is covered with rubber caps) from the bottom and two additional ones, removing the upper cover that covers the screen hinges.

The bottom cover itself is a skilfully depicted by ASUS designers element, with a translucent black “window” through which you can see the inner metal tubes of the water cooling system, and a small number of curved areas with slots for fresh air intake and cooling of the secondary components.

Red motherboard with all the main components of the system, occupying approximately 50-55% of the entire notebook area, a capacious battery, an air cooling system with two large radiators and fans, heat pipes and heat sinks of various types, four plastic units with speakers and a special metal A connector for connecting a water cooling system – that’s what you can see after opening the case.

Free access is provided to two RAM slots, a SSD with M.2 interface and a wireless network adapter. The two remaining RAM slots and one M.2 connector are located on the back of the motherboard. To access them, you need to remove the keyboard, which is somewhat more difficult.

The laptop battery is internal and removable – it is fixed with two screws. Accordingly, no difficulties with its replacement, if necessary, should arise.

The laptop ASUS ROG GX700 company plans to release in different versions, but how many they will be all and what is the difference in price – this information at the time of writing the review is missing. But one thing we know for sure: there will be modifications with Full HD and 4K screens – we got the first for testing.

Most likely, this version will be the most widespread and popular. Its retail value in European countries is about 4,000 euros, which translates into rubles at the rate at the time of writing (82 rubles per 1 euro), together with a minimal “interest” of the distributor and the final seller pours out to 350,000 rubles! Well, we did not doubt that we have an exclusive toy for a special consumer.

The review’s hero is equipped with the newest Intel processor of the 6th generation Core i7-6820HK, executed at 14 nm standards. This is a one-of-a-kind quad-core CPU with an unlocked multiplier on the Skylake architecture. The nominal processor frequency is 2.7 GHz. It supports Hyper-Threading and TurboBoost mode – in it the frequency can automatically rise to 3.6 GHz with the load on one core and up to 3.2 GHz with the load on all four.

However, with proper cooling, the system can keep the highest possible frequency and at 100% load on all the cores.
