Review Lenovo IdeaCentre AIO Y910, or Why gaming monoblock upgrade / Laptops and PCs

How to build a truly productive gaming candy bar? Correctly, use modern desktop iron. Simplicity and banality of the answer to this question, however, does not at all facilitate the task to the manufacturer. In my opinion, that’s why the absolute majority of monoblocks have either built-in notebook components or energy-efficient analogues from the desktop segment. For example, Intel processors with a “T” in the title. Yet monoblocks, like laptops, have a limited container for installing iron. The bottom line is simple: gaming monoblock – “beast”, certainly interesting, but rare and expensive. Thanks to NVIDIA for the fact that finally blurred the line between mobile and desktop graphics but an AIO (All In One) desktop computer still needs an upgrade option.

Monoblock Digital Storm Aura, the maximum configuration of which includes Intel Core i7-6950X

American collectors such as Digital Storm, Origin PC and Maingear use the barebone system equipped with a 34-inch curved 21: 9 screen when manufacturing gaming monoblocks. Most of the inhabitants do not distinguish such a candybar from a big one, but a monitor. The advantages are obvious: standard components can always be replaced, which means that the monoblock will acquire a second life in time.

Such devices in retail sales in Russia can not be found, alas. But there is the IdeaCentre AIO Y910. The assembly that visited our test lab got desktop Core i7-6700 and GeForce GTX 1080 with the possibility to replace most of the components. To some extent, the monoblock Lenovo – an exclusive. Analogues in the vastness of the Motherland were not found miraculous.

⇡ # Features, appearance, software

Two IdeaCentre AIO Y910 bundles appear on Lenovo’s official website. The most sophisticated modification, I repeat, was the Core i7-6700 and GeForce GTX 1080 Founders Edition. But the manufacturer warns that there may be more options for a monoblock on sale. Specifically, to us in the test lab came the top version with solid-state drive Samsung MZVLV256HCHP volume of 256 GB and a hard disk Western Digital WD10EZEX for 1 TB. On sale monoblock with such a set of accessories was not found. There is a version with a 2 TB hard drive and 128 GB SSD. In Moscow retail is given for 176 000 rubles.

Lenovo IdeaCentre AIO Y910-27ISH

Complete with IdeaCentre AIO Y910 go only power cord and a simple USB mouse. But Lenovo, actively developing the gaming direction, offers, among other things, an advanced periphery that fits well with a monoblock. This is a keyboard Gaming Mechanical Keyboard, a headset Y Gaming Stereo Headset and mouse Gaming Precision Mouse.

The screen got thin frames. It is interesting that there are no illuminated elements in the design. Apparently, Lenovo felt that additional lights would only distract the gamer.

The IdeaCentre AIO Y910 is made of plastic. And matte, and glossy. The presence of profile air intakes on the left and on the right suggests that Lenovo specialists were impressed by a sports car when creating a monoblock. For example, McLaren P1 . The AIO-system has a massive stand. It has a compact power supply with a power of 380 watts. The photo clearly shows that the height of the screen IdeaCentre AIO Y910 is not adjustable. But the display can be rotated 30 degrees. The design was massive. The system weighs 13 kg. But the candy bar stands firmly on a level surface due to the V-shaped leg. Does not swing. Does not slip.

On the left side of the candy bar there is an on / off key and a video input switching button. And there is a retractable plastic hanger for the headset.

To the right of the candy bar most of the interfaces are divided: four USB, a card reader, jacks for headphones and a microphone, and a DVD-drive – atavism for the 21st century. Behind the disposal of the gamer are two more USB, Ethernet port and two HDMI. For full happiness, there is not enough new-fashioned USB 3.1. Video output is required to connect a virtual reality helmet. For example, HTC Vive. The video input transforms the IdeaCentre AIO Y910 into a monitor.

Intel RealSense 3D Camera

Above is a sliding RealSense 3D camera, developed by Intel. The success of such pieces determines the amount of software, but it’s not very much. That’s why at this point in time I perceive the Intel 3D camera as a toy, nothing more. This webcam can be used, for example, to enter the system through a face scan. Also with its help you can scan objects for printing on a 3D printer, manage the Windows cursor, and there are a few unpretentious games. In addition, RealSense is also supported by the Oculus Rift VR helmet.

The external display controls IdeaCentre AIO Y910 are not provided. The setting is done in the Lenovo Nerve Center software program. The main menu of the utility shows which components are installed in the system. The “Display Settings” tab allows you to change the brightness and contrast of the screen. There is an option for autotuning. In the “Color Mode” menu four profiles are entered: “Games”, “Reading”, “Video” and “Designer”. The name of the tab “Display area” speaks for itself: for example, it is inconvenient for you to play CG: GO at 27 inches – this is fixable, the display area can be reduced.

⇡ # Picture and sound

Unfortunately, Lenovo does not disclose the characteristics of the IdeaCentre AIO Y910 display. Did not help us and specialized software. But the test results suggest that an IPS matrix with anti-reflective coating is used. It performs its work very well. The screen, however, is very brandy and attracts dust and fingerprints with all its might.

"

Lenovo IdeaCentre AIO Y910-27ISH

The monoblock is a gamer, so a matrix with a scan frequency of 144 Hz is used. There is support for AMD Freesync technology, but NVIDIA GeForce graphics card is used in the configuration, with which, of course, it is not compatible.

Treasured 144 Hz, of course, are not a panacea. Especially since the GeForce GTX 1080 in most modern games will not give out so many frames. In CS: GO, Overwatch and DOOM, where high frame rate is important, such a result will be. In Dota 2 – no.

The viewing angles in the horizontal plane are magnificent – the image does not change even at a large angle. But in the vertical plane, the deviations rapidly reduce the brightness, change the color temperature, and also visually provoke a drop in contrast. Glow-effect is present, but it is pronounced only on the black fill of the screen. If you use IdeaCentre AIO Y910 for its intended purpose, namely to sit right in front of the screen, then you will not notice any undesirable distortions. The effect of Cross-hatching is also not observed, I did not notice any flickering.

Color temperature

"

Testing with the X-Rite i1Display Pro colorimeter showed that the image quality of the IdeaCentre AIO Y910 will satisfy most users. The display does not produce a wow effect, the results are average, but no explicit blockages are observed.

The measurements were made in the “Games” mode. As a result, the maximum deviation on the gray scale was 1.6, and the average deviation was 1.08. The average error in the ColorChecker subtest (24 patterns) was 5 units. The average gamma is 2.03, and the static contrast is 818: 1. The minimum luminance of white is 10 cd / m 2 maximum – 370 cd / m 2 . Many gaming laptops can not boast of such brightness. In the “Games” mode, the luminance of white is 165 cd / m 2 . The color temperature for the greater part of the range is kept at the boundary of 6500 K. Usually this figure is seriously overestimated.

Two 5-watt speakers are responsible for the sound in the monoblock, developed jointly with Harman / Kardon. The quality of the speakers, enclosed in a compact plastic case, is simply magnificent. The volume of the volume is quite decent, while at the maximum there are no debris, no rattles, no other parasitic impurities. The high and medium frequencies are very good. But the bass is sometimes not enough, but it’s hard to expect from such a system of another.

⇡ # Cooling, frequency stability, acceleration and upgrade

Constructively, the chassis of the IdeaCentre AIO Y910 resembles the Slim Desktop form factor enclosures – the components are located in the same plane. The video card and processor are spaced apart from the support. Air is sucked through the ventilation holes from the bottom, and the hot stream is blown from above. Just note that the dust quickly accumulates in the vicinity of the hard drive and the video card fan. Therefore, the cleaning of the system once every three to four months is definitely not a problem.

Plastic covers, simulating the carbon, are removed very simply – just apply a little effort and lower them down. The motherboard and processor are hidden from the user’s eyes, but the user can get to the drives, RAM and video card. It’s nice that the SSD is equipped with passive cooling. The metal cover is in contact with the accumulator by means of a thermal padding. The second M.2 interface is not provided, so the upgrade of SSD is solely the purchase of a new device (you need a 80 mm board, the most expensive format) instead of the old one.

The hard disk is fixed in a plastic basket. First, it is easier to extract from a niche. Secondly, rubber gaskets extinguish vibration. The second SO-DIMM port is free, so the user can install another 16-GB DDR4-2133 module.

"

Landing place for video card installation

The video card is fixed in a separate casing. The sizes are adjusted so that only the reference adapter of NVIDIA will approach. And the mount is “sharpened” for blower-cooling. The GeForce GTX 1080 has HDMI and DisplayPort cables and an 8-pin power connector. There is another 6-pin cable. In games, the bundle of Core i7-6700 and GeForce GTX 1080 consumes at the peak about 230 watts. So the system will also power TITAN X (Pascal) where TDP is at 250 watts. Only now the power supply capacity of the power supply is almost not left. That’s why, in my opinion, it’s better to use the GeForce GTX 1080 quietly, and in due course upgrade to the current version of the adapter with a similar level of TDP (for the GeForce GTX 1080 it is 180 W).

By the way, IdeaCentre AIO Y910 clearly demonstrates how many real watts a powerful gaming computer needs.

Heating components for Lenovo IdeaCentre AIO Y910-27ISH

Even in a simple CPU warms up to 58 degrees Celsius on the hottest core, the cooling system worked silently at the same time. Watching videos on YouTube warmed up the quad core to 76 degrees Celsius on the hottest core. As before, the cooling of the CPU did not make itself felt.

But it’s worth downloading the Core i7-6700 to its full power (for example, using LinX 0.7.0), as the cooler starts to howl violently. A measuring instrument fixed to the level of the user’s head (~ 30 cm from the monoblock) recorded 47-47.3 dB. I repeat, it’s very noisy. And to work / play for such a candy bar becomes uncomfortable. The processor is not throttlit (the hottest core is 93 degrees Celsius), but the frequency is constantly reset to the default of 3,400 MHz.

"

The first thought after the test LinX’om – scalp! Replacement of thermal paste with liquid metal allows to “remove” the order of 10-15 degrees Celsius – proved empirically . Only here you just can not get to the CPU. The second thought is that the cooling system with Core i7-6700K can not cope. Therefore, the “simple” Core i7-6700 is the limit for the IdeaCentre AIO Y910 series. Could Lenovo have made more efficient cooling? In my opinion, there is no limit to perfection.

The most unpleasant thing is the work of the cooling system in games. Since the load on the processor is constantly changing, the cooler is switched on to its fullest, then it again becomes silent, and this happens all the time. Believe me, such “music” is perceived by hearing even worse than the monotonous roar of the fan. Core i7-6700 in games heats up to 88 degrees Celsius, but holds 3,700 MHz in Turbo Boost for all four cores.

As for cooling the remaining components, the SSD under load is heated to 66 degrees Celsius. Apparently, the presence of passive cooling helps. A hard disk warms up to 47 degrees Celsius – it is additionally cooled by airflows, sucked by the CPU cooler. Here everything is normal.
