We usually do not take desktop PCs for testing, unless it's a candy bar, not something fundamentally unusual (like the updated Mac Pro ) or an otherwise prohibitively powerful configuration, Today technical progress has reached. The computer for which we made an exception this time does not fit into any of the listed categories. In the dry balance, it's just a powerful gaming system with two graphics cards. But what sets it apart from many similar ones is usually not sold for money – the buyer needs to do it themselves. It's about overclocking and hardware modification of components – in this case, all this has already been done by the manufacturer and, moreover, does not deprive the warranty on the PC.
The Russian company EvoPC positions itself as the first "computer boutique" selling rare hardware, components for overclocking and modding PCs, as well as unique computers of the Overclocking series created with the participation of Russian master Vladimir Georgiev, better known as Smoke. He is considered the best overclocker in Russia and is one of the five world leaders by the version of HWBot.org.
The Overclocking Series
The computer is assembled on the basis of the motherboard [ASUSROGMaximusVIIFormula for the LGA1150 connector, which in this case is occupied by the processor Intel Core i7-4790K . This is the top Intel CPU of the Haswell Refresh line and one of the two quad-core processors included in it with an unlocked multiplier (Devil's Canyon). By default, the maximum frequency for it is 4.4 GHz, but in the Smoke Performance system block the "stone" was pre-accelerated to 4.8 GHz. At first glance, there is a slight difference, but for Haswell, this is a serious achievement. To ensure a margin of safety and efficient cooling during overclocking, a water cooling system is installed on the processor, and – attention! – replacement of the thermal interface between the crystal and the heat dissipating cover

The computer has two video cards ASUS STRIX GTX 970 operating in the SLI mode. Usually SLI or CrossFire are associated with top accelerators, which GTX 970 never treated. But this choice is completely justified from a practical point of view, since the GTX 970 in the tandem obviously outperforms even a single GTX 980 Ti or AMD Radeon Fury X (provided, of course, that the game can use several GPUs), but they cost almost as one flagship. Video cards are also overclocked to 117 MHz by the frequency of the GPU. The "non-circular" number is chosen so that, under load, the frequency, which in modern accelerators varies dynamically, reaches 1400 MHz. The effective memory frequency is increased slightly – from 7012 to 7100 MHz.
The memory slots totaling 16 GB of G.Skill's production are calculated for the frequency of 2132 MHz, but they were dispersed to 2,800 MHz, for which we had to slightly increase the timings (up to 12-14-13-21-300-2T).
The operating system Windows 8.1 is preinstalled on a solid-state drive Intel SSD 530 with a capacity of 180 GB. By modern standards, this is by no means the fastest SSD, built on the once popular controller SandForce SF-2281, and yet in the vast majority of home tasks its performance is quite enough. In addition to the SSD, a Seagate Desktop HDD of 2 TB is installed in the computer.
By all indications (high-frequency quad-core CPU, powerful video subsystem and comparatively weak choice of ROM), the game destination of this EvoPC Smoke Performance configuration is unmistakably determined. The price is $ 3,100 and is converted into rubles at the current exchange rate. It is quite difficult to accurately calculate the difference between a PC and its components purchased at retail, but approximately it is 30-40 thousand rubles.
The computer is assembled in a large, roomy case of the Corsair Graphite 780T.
The front and top panels are covered with grilles, unfortunately, with non-removable dust filters, but the grilles are easily removed after pressing one end (there is a latch, and on the other side – a loop). The back is the mass of the ASUS ROG Maximus VII Formula motherboard expansion connectors, including the contacts for the antenna of the built-in IEEE 802.11ac adapter (attached to the computer).
Two USB 2.0 and 3.0 Type-A connectors are connected to the top panel of the case, connectors for audio headset. There are also buttons for turning on, resetting and controlling the fan casing.
The "exhaust" grate above is completely occupied by the radiator of the water-cooling system with three 120 mm fans. Two more of the same, but slow-moving, with a large number of blades, work on the injection under the frontal grill. In the dark they glow with red light – they can be seen through the grate.
Inside the computer, the order is perfect, as most cables are laid behind the wall on which the motherboard is mounted. Moreover, all cables of Corsair RM850 PS are enclosed in a black and red braid and are assembled by flat screeds. The collectors also replaced the standard blue radiators of the G.Skill RAM modules with red ones to preserve the unity of the style.
For cooling the CPU is responsible for "dropsy" Thermaltake Water 3.0 Ultimate . The pump is combined with a water block, and the heat radiates into the air a three-section radiator. In addition to the three fans that we have already detected during an external examination of the computer, three additional Corsair AF120 fans are installed on the inside of the radiator. Another one blows air through the rear wall of the case.
All this splendor is additionally illuminated by a light-emitting diode tape paved along the edges of the case window.
Although the main components of the PC were dispersed beforehand, it turned out that there was still a small reserve for further CPU and GPU overclocking. The main processor was stable in all test applications at 4.9 GHz with a supply voltage of 1.3 V. Intel recommends not to exceed the latter value.
Graphics processors of video cards were accelerated to the base frequency of 1294 MHz, and memory – up to 7512 MHz. The addition was, respectively, 63 and 412 MHz.
The system of water cooling of the CPU in EvoPC Smoke Performance proved to be the best. In the simple temperature of the processor was kept at 34 ° C, and under load in the Linpack test from the package OCCT Perestroika did not exceed 83 ° C. At the same time, we did not even increase the speed of the fans of the SVO, giving speed to the automation. Of course, the replacement of the thermal interface of the CPU, performed by the assembler, also played its role.
