A few months ago, on our site a review of the Omen 17 (w211ur) was released, but in 2017, HP updated this series. At the core of these gaming laptops are still the central processors of Intel Kaby Lake and graphics of NVIDIA Pascal, however, Omen has changed a lot.

Omen 17 series is more suitable for those gamers who prefer to use the laptop as a stationary PC. HP has foreseen a huge number of models for every taste and purse – the table lists all the potential options.

The entry-level HP Omen 17 an008ur model arrived with the mobile version of the GeForce GTX 1050 Ti 4 GB on board. More information about this chart you can read here . In addition, the model is equipped with a central processor Core i7-7700HQ, 8 GB of RAM DDR4-2400, a solid-state drive with a capacity of 128 GB and a hard disk of 1 TB. Such a configuration in Russian retail at the time of writing the review cost from 79,000 rubles .

The Realtek gigabit controller is responsible for the local network. Wireless standards IEEE 802.11b / g / n / ac (MIMO 2 × 2 with a maximum bandwidth of up to 867 Mbps) and Bluetooth 4.2 are implemented using the Intel Dual Band Wireless-AC 7265 module. The same controller is used in Omen 17 of the previous generation.

Finally, a qualitative IPS matrix with a scan frequency of 60 Hz is used in the test sample. In more powerful models, screens with support for NVIDIA G-SYNC adaptive scanning technology are used. Let me remind you, with the help of a special module built into the laptop, the display frequency is synchronized with the frame rendering frequency on the GPU, eliminating image disruptions without harming performance and response time.

Together with Omen 17 (an008ur) comes a small and lightweight BP with a mass of about 400 g and a power of 150 watts. Obviously, more productive models are equipped with more powerful power supplies.

Finally, with the Windows 10 Home operating system, several preinstalled programs run at once. I note only the OMEN Command Center, with which you configure the macro keys P1-P5, located to the left of the main keyboard, and also assign a network priority for games and other applications. Access to the program is carried out using a separate key with the Omen logo.

# Appearance and input devices

As already mentioned, the updated Omen 17 is visibly different from the previous version. If you remember, I even called it an "ultrabook-overgrown". The new "Omen" for all 146% looks like a gamer laptop – this is indicated by the shape of the case, the color (the manufacturer indicates it as "mysterious black") and other small details. However, the continuity of the generations is observed – the modified Omen 17 (an008ur) is made mostly of matte plastic that looks like a carbon. Only the panel around the keyboard is made of aluminum with a polishing effect. The plastic is practical in use – on the cover you can not see either dust or fingerprints. But on the metal surface, all this is clearly visible.

The laptop turned out rather big. With a thickness of 33 mm, the mass of the device is almost 3.8 kg. However, in 99.9% of cases, devices like Omen 17 (an008ur) are used as a stationary system.

The laptop cover is attached to the main body with two massive loops and opens approximately 130 degrees. The rotary mechanism is positioned quite accurately, so that the screen does not tremble during operation and games.

The notebook does not slip on any flat surface due to four U-shaped legs. Also on the bottom there are two grilles through which fans of the cooling system take the air. Already heated streams leave the body through perforation on the back wall.

There are no connectors at the front and rear – all the main ports are soldered on the sides of the laptop.

On the left, Omen 17 (an008ur) has mini-DisplayPort and HDMI video outputs, one USB 3.0 A-type, Ethernet connector, USB 3.0 Type-C (compatible with DisplayPort 1.2), a pair of 3.5 mm mini jacks for connecting headphones and a microphone and an SD card reader. On the right is the connector for the power supply and two more USB 3.0 A-type ports. Here is the indicator of the activity of the drive and DVD-drive. The previous version of Omen 17 disk drive was not completed.

Again, in comparison with the previous version of Omen 17, the novelty noticeably changed the keyboard and touchpad – and for the better. First, Omen 17 (an008ur) received five additional macro keys, which are configured in the OMEN Command Center. Secondly, this very OMEN Command Center starts when you press the button with the OMEN logo – it is located next to the digital block. Third, the new version of the laptop got more convenient keys with arrows, as well as a number of F1-F12. These buttons just got bigger. In addition, now functions such as changing the brightness of the screen and the volume of the sound or turning the backlight on and off, are activated only with the Fn modifier, that is, they have become secondary. Fourthly, the synaptic touchpad Synaptics was replaced by a very buttoned one, with two mechanical keys. As a result, using the touch panel Omen 17 (an008ur) has become easier and more enjoyable.

It is convenient to use the notebook for both day and night – the keyboard is equipped with a single-level red illumination. At the same time, the WASD buttons, painted in red, are highlighted in white. Also, without additional lighting, there is no RJ-45 connector when connecting an Ethernet cable.

The new version of Omen 17 uses a webcam with a resolution of 720p at a frequency of 30 Hz. The video quality is typical for gaming laptops in 2017: with artificial lighting, the picture turns out rather cloudy. Qualitative streams with such a "web" can not be carried out, but it is quite possible to communicate with relatives via Skype.

# Internal structure and upgrade possibilities

The previous version of Omen 17 was quite difficult to maintain, because it was not possible to disassemble the laptop on its own. The manufacturer made easily removable only a small hatch, which gave access to the RAM modules. The new Omen 17 (an008ur) in this regard has become much more tractable: now to access the laptop's accessories it is enough to unscrew ten screws and carefully remove the plastic bottom entirely.

The central processor and mobile graphics are cooled by a common cooler consisting of two heat pipes with radiators at the ends and two fans.

The test instance has 8 GB of RAM in the form of one ADATA module AO1P24HC8T1-BQXS. The plate operates at an effective frequency of 2400 MHz with a latency of 17-17-17-39. The Windows operating system is installed on the Samsung MZVLW128HEGR NVMe-drive with a capacity of 128 GB. The second storage device is a 2.5-inch hard drive HGST HTS721010A9E630. It is noteworthy that exactly the same components are used in the recently tested HP Pavilion Power 15 (CB018UR) .

Possible actions for the next upgrade of Omen 17 (an008ur) are obvious: here one more 8-gigabyte RAM module is requested. Also over time, you can replace the solid-state drive and hard disk with more capacious and faster analogs.
