Working trip to Los Santos: HP Pavilion Power 15 / Laptops and PCs

In 2017 I was lucky enough to test several notebooks with NVIDIA Pascal graphics of an entry level. The mobile versions of the GeForce GTX 1050 and GeForce GTX 1050 Ti work well in modern games – proved and tested by the 3DNews lab repeatedly. So it turns out that in 15- and 17-inch models with such GPU set up a fairly productive CPUs of the Kaby Lake generation. Therefore, gamers and users who want to get a powerful mobile device, choose one of similar laptops.

The HP Pavilion Power 15 is another representative of the “spots” with a fast 4-core chip Core i7-7700HQ and a mobile version of the GeForce GTX 1050. At the same time, the laptop performs well both a portable working tool and a stationary home PC.

In the computer store Delta Game can find seven modifications HP Pavilion Power 15 . To me on the test came a version with Core i7-7700HQ, GeForce GTX 1050 4 GB, 8 GB RAM, 128 GB SSD and 1 TB hard drive. And all the HP Pavilion Power 15 are equipped with the wireless module Intel Wireless-AC 7265, which supports IEEE 802.11b / g / n / ac standards with a frequency of 2.4 and 5 GHz and a maximum bandwidth of 867 Mbps and Bluetooth 4.2. A Realtek controller is responsible for the LAN connection.

It’s nice that the HP Pavilion Power 15 comes with a compact and light enough power source with a mass of approximately 400 g and a power of 150 W.

# Appearance and input devices

The case of the laptop is made of high-quality plastic. The cover of the display and the bottom are somewhat like so soft to touch soft-touch. The material, however, is marquee, and therefore it will be necessary to keep cleaning wipes at hand all the time. The area around the keyboard is made of ground aluminum. Looks HP Pavilion Power 15 quite strictly, but it provides a green backlight keyboard. On sale there are versions with a white edging of the keys, a touchpad and, accordingly, a white backlight.

At the beginning of the article, I hinted that the 15.6-inch HP Pavilion Power 15 is fairly easy to transport. A man in the prime of his life – yes, because the mass of the laptop is only 2.2 kg. For example, the previously tested “patches” with graphics GeForce GTX 1050 and GeForce GTX 1050 Ti – Dell Inspiron 7567 ASUS ROG Strix GL553VE and Lenovo Legion Y520 – weigh a little more: 2.6, 2.5 and 2.4 kg respectively. Yes and laptops with graphics in the design of Max-Q at a thickness of 18-19 mm by weight correspond to the same indicator – 2.2 kg. By the way, the thickness of HP Pavilion Power 15 is 24 mm.

The cover of the laptop opens approximately 150 degrees. While typing and playing at the table, I did not even notice a hint of play, however, if the laptop is put on its knees, the screen starts to sway noticeably during printing. “The HP Pavilion Power 15 cover is to blame”, it is designed in such a way that when it is opened, the bottom is slightly raised. So fans of the cooling system suck in air better. At the bottom, you can find a small air duct grating and four rubber feet of green color.

All the main interfaces are located on the sides. On the left – two USB 3.0 A-type and 3.5-mm combined mini-jack for connecting the headset. On the right is the connector for the external power supply, Ethernet port, HDMI-out, another USB 3.0 A-type, USB 3.0 C-type and a card reader supporting SD / MMC formats.

Front and rear of no interfaces for the HP Pavilion Power 15 is not provided. Because of the non-standard design of the cover, it turns out that the heated air is blown directly onto the screen surface.

On the keyboard, the HP Pavilion Power 15 keypad almost completely replicates the HID used in HP Omen 17 . I did not feel the difference in terms of tactile sensations: click is felt well, the course is small and light, the buttons barely audible click. It turns out that the keyboard of the HP Pavilion Power 15 is also more like an input device used in ultrabooks, because in game models it is often used zone multi-colored illumination, as well as a color combination of keys WASD and “arrows”. Here we see the presence of a strict keyboard with a single-level green backlight.

By the way, not all our readers liked the keyboard Omen 17. This HID has small, uncomfortable buttons with arrows. The keys from the F1-F12 function range are also small. They have control functions of the laptop. By default, such options as changing the brightness of the screen and volume level, are activated without the Fn modifier – they are paramount. But if you need keys F1-F12, then without a combination with the Fn-button you can not do. This scheme of operation is not very suitable for games, but it can be changed in the BIOS settings of the laptop. Printing the same text on the HP Pavilion Power 15 keyboard is even very comfortable.

The no-button wide touchpad from Synaptics measuring 115 × 60 mm complements the picture: pleasant to the touch, sonorous, but not rattling and well recognizing gestures.

Finally, the laptop is equipped with a webcam with a resolution of 1080p and a sweep frequency of 30 Hz. The image quality of the camera is poor. Indoors, with artificial lighting, the picture is very noisy. A satisfactory image from it can be achieved only with bright external illumination.

# Internal structure and upgrade possibilities

Access to HP Pavilion Power 15 accessories is quite convenient. Although first you have to unscrew the seven screws on the bottom, two of which are hidden under rubber feet. Then carefully remove the bottom. The design uses plastic latches, so you have to act decisively, but at the same time try not to overdo it.

The cooling system, at first glance, looks rather primitive. CPU and GPU are cooled by a single design, consisting of two heat pipes and two fans. However, the effectiveness of the work of the HP Pavilion Power 15 I will go further.

All the hardware that we can replace is installed on one side of the PCB. In the test modification of the laptop, in addition to the pre-soldered on the PCB processor Core i7-7700HQ and graphics GeForce GTX 1050, 8 GB of DDR4-2400 RAM with 17-17-17-39 delays are used in the form of one Hyundai module HMA81GS6AFR8N-UH, NVMe-drive Samsung MZVLW128HEGR and 2.5-inch hard drive HGST HTS721010A9E630. In principle, the most logical step to upgrade the HP Pavilion Power 15 will be to install an additional 8 GB RAM card with the same parameters and replace the SSD with a faster and more capacious analog.
