Yoga can not do this / Laptops and PCs

Manufacturers of laptop-transformers have not yet come to a common understanding of how the actual transformation mechanism should look. Sometimes one and the same company uses different mechanisms: for example, Acer has like more familiar devices with loops that open up to 360 degrees, and more sophisticated devices – starting with the very incredible Aspire R7 something more humanlike like our hero today, the Acer Aspire R13. As with most transformers, the Acer Aspire R13 display not only allows you to work with this notebook as with a tablet, but also to adjust the geometry of the case to the current needs of the owner – depending on whether he is sitting at a table, going to the subway or lying on the sofa. A total of six basic display positions are available, not counting intermediate options.

In general, the display in this case, the manufacturer paid a lot of attention, which is expressed even in the technical description on the site Acer, where the lion's share of flattering words concerns it. Speech there goes also about high resolution – 2560 × 1440 points, and about a protective covering Corning Gorilla Glass 3, and about firm rotary mechanism Ezel Aero Hinge, and about many other things. In addition, the display has a multi-touch surface and Acer Active Pen pen to implement all the creative ideas of the owner. Let's try to figure out who and why all this diversity can come in handy.

# Package Contents

The novelty comes in a beautifully designed box of very dense cardboard in black. Inside the box along with a neatly packaged laptop, the following accessories were found:

  • power adapter with removable power cable;
  • pen Acer Active Pen;
  • short printed user manual in Russian.

<p> The package bundled with anything remarkable would not be different if it did not have a multifunctional Acer Active Pen pen. The latter is intended for both simple management of the laptop, and for solving various creative tasks. The pen is active – it works from one AAAA form factor battery, which is easily installed in the unwinded metal case. The tip of the pen is sensitive to the pressing force, which allows you to perform graphic work, and on the case of this input device there is a swing-key with two standard control buttons. It only remains to add that in the hand Acer Active Pen is just perfect, and its mass characteristics have turned out to be balanced. The only downside is that there is no storage compartment for the pen on the case of the notebook itself, and there is no protective cover for it, as there is no cover for the laptop itself. </p>

The official website of the manufacturer at the time of writing this material included six different versions of the Acer Aspire R13 notebook, differing in processors, type and amount of RAM, integrated video core models, disk subsystem capacity, battery life, presence or absence of a pen and even a display resolution . But all modifications have the same transformable case with a keyboard, and also the processor type is ultra mobile, that is, the U-series with a lowered TDP index.

In the detailed specifications, instead of the generic name Acer Aspire R13, there are models starting for some reason with "Acer Aspire R7- …", and some were the same! There is a suspicion that someone simply has problems with the Russian-language version of the site, so we better focus not on the model number, but on the index listed there. The sample that came to us in the test lab had the index NX.MQQER.003. The other five modifications of this notebook differ by the last digit in the index. So when buying it is worth to be extremely attentive, and then you can get completely different than what was required.

Information about the processor and chipset

The NX.MQQER.003 model is assembled on the Intel Haswell platform with a dual-core Intel Core i7-4510U processor with a base clock speed of 2.0 GHz, and in Turbo Boost mode it can increase to 3.1 GHz. The processor is produced on a 22-nanometer process technology. Its thermo package TDP is 15 W, and the cache volume of the third level is 4 MB. Among the modifications of the Acer Aspire R13 is a medium-sized version.

Information about the operative memory

The laptop is equipped with the operational memory LPDDR3-1600 with a total capacity of 4 GB, working in two-channel mode. All chips are soldered directly on the motherboard and can not be replaced, it is also not possible to increase the available capacity.

Information about the video adapter

As an graphics adapter in all versions of Acer Aspire R13 uses an integrated solution: Intel HD Graphics 5500 for Intel Broadwell platforms or Intel HD Graphics 4400 (GT2) for Intel Haswell platforms, as in our case. The graphics core operates at a clock speed of 200 to 1100 MHz. To connect an external monitor, the Acer Aspire R13 has a single HDMI video output. Well, the resolution of its own display from the Acer Aspire R13 can be 1920 × 1080 (Full HD) or 2560 × 1440 pixels (WQHD), as in our sample.

Features of the disk subsystem

According to the official specification, the disk subsystem Acer Aspire R13 can be represented by SSD modules with a capacity of 128 or 256 GB. In our copy was installed the module Kingston RBU-SNS8100S3 / 256GD form factor M.2 with SATA 6 Gb / s with a capacity of 256 GB (actual capacity of 238.5 GB). By default, the disk space of the laptop is represented in one section. It should be noted that the Acer Aspire R13 has two M.2 slots, and only one of them is occupied by an SSD module, so there is room for increasing disk space, in contrast to RAM,

The laptop is equipped with a reader for flash cards format SD / SDHC. The audio system is represented by the widely distributed Realtek ALC283 module, which works with HD Audio. To connect the headphone and microphone to the laptop, a 3.5 mm jack is used. To output sound on the notebook itself, at the bottom of it, there are stereo speakers. Wired gigabit network from the Acer Aspire R13 without additional external devices can not be organized – there is no RJ-45 port. About the Bluetooth module in the official specification of the laptop does not say anything, but it is combined with the adapter Wi-Fi 802.11b / g / n Qualcomm Atheros AR5BWB222, which has a PCI Express interface. Unfortunately, detailed information about this device could not be found, and therefore it was not possible to find out the version of Bluetooth.

A rechargeable Li-ion battery is built into the case. Its passport base capacity is 48 Wh (3220 mAh, 15.2 V), and the minimum is 46 Wh (3090 mAh, 15.2 V). The actual capacity at full charge was 46.6 Wh / h. To charge the battery, as well as to operate the laptop from the network, a power adapter with an output power of 45 W (2.37 A, 19 V) is used.

# Design and ergonomics

The notebook is made in a plastic case of a dark gray color with a characteristic "metallic" texture. The top cover has a Corning Gorilla Glass 3 glass coating, and all other surfaces are made of matt. The lower part of the body is made of plastic with a rubberized coating that increases the friction between the laptop and the surface on which it is located, although there are four rubber feet at the laptop.

Unlike conventional notebooks, the Acer Aspire R13 cover does not fully cover the main body part. It is noticeably smaller in area and is fixed in a n-shaped frame – the only body element made of metal. The frame itself is fixed to the base with the help of loops, no different from those of other laptop models.

On the lower surface of the case, next to the rubber feet, there are small speakers with rectangular grids. In general, it should be noted that, despite the fact that the two main dimensions are not the smallest for the 13-inch model, the thickness of the case is the lowest possible for the Acer Aspire R13. It allows you to easily fit the laptop into a folder with papers or a thin briefcase, and in the backpack do not pay attention to its presence. And of course, it's a pleasure to take such a thin computer into your hands.

Features of the transformation of the case Acer Aspire R13

But the main feature of the case is its flexible (in the literal sense of the word) transformation possibilities. The Acer Aspire R13 screen can not only turn over, turning the laptop into a tablet computer, but also allows you to adjust to the current user tasks due to the possibility of rotation around two parallel axes. To understand the mechanism of action, it is better to look at the photographs.

The swivel mechanism has its own brand name – Ezel Aero Hinge, but something revolutionary is not. The fact is that a couple of years ago another representative of Acer transformers had already visited our test lab with a similar, though less elegant, scheme of variable geometry. It's about the model Acer Aspire R7 the name of which caused confusion in the modifications of the already new model Acer Aspire R13. But that was a big, 15.6-inch laptop with a 28.5 mm thick case. Our subject is much more modest in size.

The developer offers six main uses: Notebook, Ezel, Stand, Pad, Tent and Display, but it is clearly fixed (with a characteristic click) only in Notebook, Pad and Display, that is, when it is in the same plane as the metal n-shaped frame. The rotation mechanism is sufficiently tight, so the display will not rotate spontaneously, in whatever position you leave it. To the quality of assembly and operation of the mechanism itself, there is not even the slightest claim.

 Fully-opened display "height =" 79 "width =" 600 "/> </a></p>
<div class=

Fully-opened display

But the version of the full disclosure of the display by the manufacturer for some reason is undeservedly forgotten. And in vain, because it opens almost 180 °, which can also be convenient when working with a laptop on your lap. Another question is how relevant are all these "flexible" opportunities. Such a variety can not boast even the Lenova Yoga transformers, but in real life infrequently we will have to use, say, a rather specific Ezel mode. Unless you regularly go to exhibitions and presentations, where clients are required to show and tell something in the field. Here, in this case, "yoga" from Lenovo really will be the loser.

# Workspace and input devices

 The interior of the Acer Aspire R13 "height =" 441 "width =" 600 "/> </a></p>
<div class=

Acer Aspire R13 with open lid

Despite the fact that the display of the novelty is completely covered with Corning Gorilla Glass 3 protective glass and does not have any protrusions at the edges, the frame around the working area is quite wide – about 15 mm at the sides, 29 mm from the bottom and 18 mm at the top , where the webcam is located.

 The keyboard "height =" 353 "width =" 600 "/> </a></p>
<p> The keyboard of the Acer Aspire R13, so to speak, is traditional for the Acer ultrabooks. Flat keys 16 × 14 mm in size have the smallest possible height and a large enough space between each other (at least 3 mm), which allows you not to miss a key when printing blindly. Another question is the layout. To her, we had arose (and <a href= before ) a lot of questions and claims. Despite the huge unoccupied area around the keyboard, the manufacturer decided to save and combine not only a number of function keys with a number of digits, but also the keys [Pause][Prt Scr][Insert][Home] and [End] with other keys . Also unusually located and have unusual shape and size of the key [Delete][PgUp][PgDn][Caps Lock] and the letter [Ё]. To name the keyboard Acer Aspire R13 convenient, alas, it is impossible, because it will have a long time to get used to. If you have to type a lot of text, before buying, it's best to carefully read the layout and think about whether you can adapt to it.

As for the touch panel, we have no claims to it. It is big enough and has decent responsiveness. With the keys emulating the two main mouse buttons, its dimensions are 150 × 60 mm. The panel is slightly shifted to the left, but the space next to it is more than enough for comfortable work. But the quality of the plastic, of which the inner part of the case Acer Aspire R13, is made, unfortunately, was not too high. After a week of testing on the wide surfaces left and right of the keyboard, there were characteristic traces – scratches from contact with the lid. It is obvious that in a month or two the paintwork on these places will be rubbed to the ground.
